PrivateChief vs. BELAY

Do you need a person for a few hours a week, or a Chief that never clocks off?

BELAY matches busy leaders with U.S.-based assistants, from executive and personal assistants to marketing and operations support, usually on a fractional, month-to-month basis. For judgement, relationships and difficult conversations, a good person is still better than any software. PrivateChief is an AI Chief, set up and looked after by engineers, for the routine work of a household, a business or both. This page sets the two side by side, including the places where we would point you to BELAY.

Who should choose which.

Consider BELAY

Consider BELAY when you want a U.S.-based person on your team for a set number of hours, the work calls for judgement or a human voice, and you value being able to scale those hours up or down month to month.

BELAY’s assistants are U.S.-based and matched by a person who scopes the work first, with a Client Success Consultant who stays involved and a Right-Fit Guarantee that rematches you at no added cost. Support is month to month, and a Personal Assistant covers household logistics as well as work. [1]

Consider PrivateChief

Consider PrivateChief when most of what you hand off is routine administration — calendars, correspondence, reminders, projects, documents and the books — and you want it moving at any hour, not only during an assistant’s booked hours.

A useful starting point is the Household Office: keeping documents and administrative work in order. The Chief prepares, organizes and explains; licensed professional advice and hands-on care remain with people.

What mattersBELAYPrivateChief
Who does the workA U.S.-based assistant matched from a bench of more than 2,000 vetted professionals, with a Client Success Consultant for the life of the engagement. [1]A named AI Chief configured for your household, your business or both. PrivateChief engineers set it up and remain responsible for it; there is no person working at a desk on your behalf.
HoursFractional. Support typically begins at 45 hours a month, and many clients start an Executive or Personal Assistant at 10 to 20 hours a week, adjusting as needs change. [2]Always on: at night, at weekends and on holidays, with standing routines such as the morning briefing running without being asked. There are no hours to book.
What it handlesA Personal Assistant covers family calendars and household schedules, household vendors and service providers, bills and household expense tracking, appointments, reservations, gifts, and online orders and returns. [3]Calendars, correspondence, reminders, tracked projects, organized documents and the books, through the accounts and permissions agreed at setup. The in-home option adds compatible home controls.
Calls and meetingsExecutive Assistants can return calls, attend meetings, take notes and follow up on action items on your behalf. [2]Your Chief can place a straightforward call, such as booking a table, after you have confirmed it. Long or delicate conversations, and standing in for you at a meeting, are better left to a person.
Where the work happensEvery BELAY assistant works remotely, inside the systems and channels you already use: email, phone and video. [2]Each household or company has its own dedicated server that we run, or a private appliance at your premises. What your Chief knows stays there, and does not leave when a person moves on.
CommitmentMonth to month, with no long-term contract. If the first match is not right, BELAY rematches you at no added cost. [1]Month to month, with no annual commitment or cancellation fee. Fully hosted service has a fixed $299 onboarding fee; an in-home installation is quoted.

Candidly

Where a human assistant is still better.

A person is better at

Judgement calls
Weighing an awkward request from a client, knowing when a rule should bend, or reading what you meant rather than what you said. An experienced person does this better, and we would rather say so.
Phone calls with real people
Negotiating, disputing a charge, persuading a busy office to fit you in, or sitting in a meeting for you. Your Chief manages simple calls; a person handles the hard ones better.
In-person errands
Neither a BELAY assistant, who works remotely, nor PrivateChief can collect the dry cleaning or wait in for a delivery. If you need someone physically present, you need a local person whichever you choose.
Relationships
Being the familiar, trusted voice that your clients, family and suppliers know by name over the years.

PrivateChief is better at

Always on
No booked hours and no monthly minimum of time. Routines run on schedule and a request at midnight is handled at midnight.
In your own systems
Your Chief works on your own dedicated server or appliance, keeps a continuous record of the household or business, and that record stays with you.
Shared, with privacy
One membership serves the whole household, or the whole team on Business, with each person’s privacy and permissions kept separately.
Cost
A published price: $149 to $299 a month in service fees, plus metered AI usage.

The complete cost

How much does BELAY cost?

BELAY

Not published

BELAY does not publish a rate. It prices each assistant engagement individually, by scope of work and level of support, and charges it as a predictable monthly fee rather than an hourly wage. A Client Success Consultant scopes the work on an intake call, so the price is quoted on a call. [1]

PrivateChief

From $149 / month

Personal is $149 a month, Business $199 a month, and both together $299 a month. Fully hosted service needs no equipment and has a fixed $299 onboarding fee; an in-home installation is quoted for the job.

AI usage is separate: bring your own OpenAI account, or use capacity we supply at our cost plus 30%. Metered voice is billed at cost plus 30% either way. No annual commitment or cancellation fee.

See the complete pricing

Because BELAY quotes each engagement, we cannot honestly put a figure beside ours. Ask BELAY for the monthly fee for the hours you need, add the year up, and set it against PrivateChief’s published fee plus usage. They buy different things: one is a person’s time and judgement, the other a managed AI service that is always on.

Before you choose.

Is PrivateChief a replacement for a BELAY assistant?

For some people, partly. If most of what you delegate is routine — scheduling, reminders, correspondence, research, keeping projects and documents in order — a Chief can carry much of it. If you rely on someone’s judgement, their voice on the phone, or their presence in your meetings, keep the person. We would rather lose the sale than tell you otherwise.

Can I use both?

Yes. A fractional assistant for the judgement work and a Chief for the routine and the out-of-hours is a sensible combination. If you run both, agree which of them owns which tasks, so nothing is done twice and nothing falls between them.

Does PrivateChief make phone calls?

Yes, within limits. Your Chief can place a straightforward call, such as booking a table, and it reads the plan back and waits for your confirmation first. It is not the right choice for a long negotiation, a dispute, or a caller who simply wants a person.

Why can you not show BELAY’s price?

BELAY does not publish one. Its own pages say each engagement is priced individually by scope and level of support. Rather than guess, we suggest you ask for a quote for the hours you need.

Do BELAY assistants use AI?

BELAY says its Executive Assistants are AI-fluent and use modern tools to work more efficiently, with human judgement still driving the decisions. PrivateChief runs on OpenAI today. The difference is not access to AI; it is a person’s booked hours set against an always-on Chief set up for you.
