For Households Carrying the Mental Load

Which household jobs can an AI Chief actually hold?

The mental load is the part of running a house that nobody sees: noticing that something needs doing, remembering it, planning it, and making sure it happens. Even in homes where the chores are shared, one person usually carries it in their head.

This page goes through 23 common household jobs and says plainly which ones a PrivateChief Chief can take off that person's mind, which it shares, and which stay with you. Every job it takes on links to a short walkthrough of the real app doing it.

How to Read the Table

Every job has three parts.

The load is rarely the doing. It is the first two parts, which never stop. So for each job we ask how much of the noticing and planning a Chief takes over, and what is left for a person.

  • Noticing.Spotting that it needs doing, and remembering it until it is done.
  • Planning.Deciding when, by whom, and getting what is needed lined up.
  • Doing.The work itself.
Your Chief holds it8The noticing and planning are the Chief's. You answer a question or do the last step.
Shared10The Chief keeps track and prepares. A person still does the main work or makes the call.
Still yours5A person has to carry it. The Chief may remind you, and that is all.
The 23 Jobs

What a Chief holds, what it shares, and what stays yours.

The videos follow the Ashfords, a family we invented for the demonstrations, and their Chief, Savannah. The screens are the real PrivateChief app. Each video is about two minutes long.

Time and schedules
The family calendarWho needs to be where, and who needs reminding. Your Chief holds it Keeps the household calendar and each person's private one side by side, takes new events when you tell it, shows connected Google and Apple calendars, and sends each reminder only to the people involved. With wall units, it can also say it out loud at home. Saying yes to the plans. It knows only what someone tells it or what is already in a connected calendar. ▶ Watch 2:24Calendar
Knowing when to leaveThe appointment is at nine. When do we walk out the door? Anything said out loud at home needs the in-home option with wall units; a fully hosted Chief works through the PrivateChief apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Mac. Your Chief asks before it sends, books or changes anything on your behalf.

If You Already Divide the Work

A Chief does not replace the conversation.

Many couples now divide household work deliberately, often with Eve Rodsky's Fair Play method, where each job has one owner who notices it, plans it and does it. Nothing here replaces that agreement. Deciding who owns what is the one job on our list that no software should touch.

What a Chief changes is the cost of owning a job. Once you have agreed who has the upkeep or the school forms, the Chief keeps that person's list, dates and reminders, so owning the job takes less remembering, and the other partner can see it is in hand without asking.

PrivateChief is not affiliated with or endorsed by Fair Play or Eve Rodsky. Fair Play is their trademark. The jobs above are our own grouping, in our own words.

The Honest Part

It costs far more than an app.

If your household needs a shared calendar and a grocery list everyone can see, a free or low-cost family app will serve you well, and we would rather you chose one than paid us for more than you need.

PrivateChief is a managed service: set up and looked after by people, with a dedicated AI Chief for your household. It makes sense when the organizing is a real part of someone's week and you want it held, not just tracked.

Personal, per month $149 One household and its Personal Chief, with a sign-in for each family member.
Getting started $299 One-time onboarding for fully hosted service, with nothing to install. An in-home appliance is quoted for the actual equipment and setup.
AI capacity Cost + 30% What your Chief uses to listen, reason and speak, billed a month behind. Or bring your own OpenAI account; voice is always metered.
First year, hosted Personal $2,087 $299 plus twelve months at $149, before AI usage. No annual commitment and no cancellation fee.

The Next Step

See whether it would hold your household's jobs.

A private consultation is a conversation about the jobs that sit on one person in your home. If a free app would serve you better, we will say so. If PrivateChief fits, we will tell you what setup involves and what your first months are likely to cost before you commit to anything.

Questions

The mental load, answered plainly.

The mental load is the unseen part of running a household: noticing that something needs doing, remembering it, planning it and making sure it happens, on top of the work itself. It tends to fall on one person, even in homes where the visible chores are shared.
Part of it. An AI Chief is good at the noticing and the remembering: dates, renewals, upkeep, promises and who has which job. It cannot do the physical work, make your family's decisions or do the caring. Of the 23 household jobs on this page, we count 8 that a PrivateChief Chief holds, 10 that it shares with you and 5 that stay entirely yours.
PrivateChief is not a Fair Play product and is not affiliated with Fair Play or Eve Rodsky. It can sit alongside any way a couple divides the work. Once you have agreed who owns a job, your Chief keeps that person's list, dates and reminders, so owning the job takes less remembering.
Each person has their own sign-in. Household calendars, shopping lists and chores are shared. Private calendar events, follow-ups, money records and health records belong to the person who keeps them.
PrivateChief Personal is $149 a month, fully hosted with a one-time $299 onboarding fee or on an appliance in your home, plus the AI capacity your Chief uses, billed at cost plus 30 percent or through your own OpenAI account. A household that only needs a shared calendar and grocery list will be well served by a free or low-cost app.
