PrivateChief Calendar: A Family Calendar With Room for Private Plans

2:24 · Narrated walkthrough of the real app · Watch on YouTube

Calendar is the PrivateChief tool that keeps a household's plans in one place without making everything public: your own events stay on your private calendar, family events go on the shared household calendar with the right people attached, and connected Google and Apple calendars appear alongside. The household in this walkthrough, the Ashfords, is invented for the demonstration.

Calendar

What Calendar does

  • Shows the month with a count of events on each day, and an agenda you can filter to a single day.
  • Keeps two calendars in one: My Calendar, which only you can see, and Household, which the whole family shares.
  • Saves events to My Calendar, Household, or a connected Google or Apple calendar you allow PrivateChief to write to.
  • Repeats events daily, weekly, on weekdays, monthly, yearly or on the days you choose, with an optional end date, and asks whether a change applies to one event, this and future events, or the whole series.
  • Lets household events name their participants, who get the reminders, or be informational only.
  • Sends reminders from the start time up to a day before, and can also speak them on wall units at home.
  • Shows other members' shared Google and Apple events read-only, with a note to change them in their own calendar app.
  • Your Chief adds and changes events when you ask, keeping personal plans private unless you say they are for the family.

What the narrator says

0:00Family plans and private ones, side by side

A family calendar has two jobs. Keep everyone's plans in one place, and keep a few of them private. The PrivateChief Calendar does both.

0:11A month at a glance

This is Laura Ashford's October, from a family invented for this demonstration. Each day shows how many events it holds, and today is outlined.

0:23Tap a day to filter the agenda

Tap a day, and the agenda shows just that day. Saturday has Ella's college visit, and Grandma Ruth's birthday, which repeats every year. Show all month brings everything back.

0:37Private and Household

It is really two calendars in one. Events marked Private are on Laura's own calendar, and only she can see them. Household events, like Sam's hockey practice, are shared with the whole family.

0:52Where an event is saved

Every event has a title, a place and notes. Save to chooses where it goes. My Calendar, Household, or a Google or Apple calendar you have connected and allowed PrivateChief to write to.

1:07Repeating events and participants

Events can repeat daily, weekly, on weekdays, monthly, yearly, or on the days you pick, like Mondays and Wednesdays for hockey. On a household event, Participants decides who gets the reminder. Informational only reminds no one.

1:25Reminders and announcements at home

Reminders arrive anywhere from the moment it starts to a day before. Turn on Announce at home, and the wall units say it out loud. And when you change a repeating event, you choose: only this one, this and future ones, or every one.

1:43Connected Google and Apple calendars

Connected Google and Apple calendars show up here too. Michael shares his work calendar with the household, so his client dinner appears, read-only, with a note to change it in Google Calendar.

1:58Just tell your Chief

Or just tell Savannah, the family's Chief. Your own plans go on your private calendar unless you say otherwise, and household events go on with the right people attached, so the right phones get the reminder.
