PrivateChief Friend Mode: Someone to Talk To, On Your Terms

2:17 · Narrated walkthrough of the real app · Watch on YouTube

Friend mode is a private place to talk with your PrivateChief whenever you feel like it. Check-ins are optional and entirely your choice, and the safety rules are explained plainly before anything starts. The household in this walkthrough, the Ashfords, is invented for the demonstration.

Friend mode is not therapy, counseling or an emergency service. In the US, if you are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911 if someone is in immediate danger.

Friend mode

What Friend mode does

  • Starts a conversation whenever you say you want to chat; conversations stay off shared screens.
  • Optional check-ins on a regular schedule or after some quiet days, by email, text, both, or a live call to your own mobile, at the time you choose.
  • Check-in messages are deliberately generic and never mention anything you have discussed.
  • If something you say suggests immediate danger, your Chief says so, gives you crisis numbers, and encourages you to reach out.
  • An emergency contact is optional and defaults to nobody. The company is never notified.
  • After a difficult conversation, your Chief stops reaching out first for 30 days, and the screen says why; check-ins resume as soon as you start a conversation.
  • Adults only, in the US. Pause any time, turn it off and keep the history, or erase everything.

What the narrator says

0:00Someone to talk to

Sometimes you do not need anything done. You just want someone to talk to. Friend mode is a private place to talk with your Chief, whenever you feel like it.

0:12A private place to talk

This is Laura Ashford's screen, from a family invented for this demonstration. She talks with Savannah, the family's Chief, by saying she wants to chat. Her conversations never appear on a shared screen.

0:27Optional check-ins: schedule, channel and time

If she would like Savannah to get in touch first, she can choose check-ins. On a regular schedule, or only after some quiet days. By email, by text, or as a live phone call to her own mobile, at the time she picks.

0:44Check-ins never mention anything private

A check-in never mentions anything private. It may land on a lock screen in front of anyone, so it simply says hello, and that she can talk whenever she likes.

0:56The one exception to privacy

Before anything starts, Savannah explains the one exception to privacy. If Laura ever says something that suggests she is in immediate danger, Savannah will say so, give her the numbers for people who can help, and encourage her to reach out right away.

1:14Who may be contacted is your choice

Laura decides whether anyone else should ever be contacted, and who. It is optional, and the default is nobody. PrivateChief, the company, is never notified.

1:27Adults only, and turning it on

Friend mode is for adults only. She confirms her age, confirms she has read the note, and turns it on.

1:37Just a conversation

Then it is simply a conversation. Savannah remembers what Laura has shared, so she can ask how Sam's first game went, and listen.

1:48The 30-day pause, and turning it off

After a difficult conversation, Savannah stops reaching out first for thirty days, so the next move is Laura's, and the screen says so. Laura can pause any time, turn it off and keep the history, or erase everything.
