PrivateChief Shopping Lists: One Shared List the Whole House Can Add To

2:25 · Narrated walkthrough of the real app · Watch on YouTube

Shopping Lists is the PrivateChief tool that gives the whole household one set of shared lists: the weekly groceries, the hardware store, a holiday dinner. Anyone can add to them from the app, by asking their Chief in a chat, or by saying it out loud at home, and the box at the top shows what is already on the list before you add a duplicate. The household in this walkthrough, the Ashfords, is invented for the demonstration.

Shopping Lists

What Shopping Lists does

  • Keeps as many named lists as you like, shared by everyone in the household, each showing how many items are left to buy.
  • Groups items by category, with a quantity, a star for favorites and an optional note for the shopper.
  • Searches as you type, showing items already on the list, items already bought and matching favorites before you add anything new.
  • Adding an item that is already on the list keeps its quantity instead of doubling it.
  • Files new items under a category automatically, and remembers the category you choose for an item next time.
  • Lets each list have its own categories: add, rename, reorder or delete them. Empty categories stay hidden.
  • Moves checked items to Purchased, where they can be put back on the list with one tap.
  • Your Chief adds, changes and removes items when you ask, and asks which list to use when you don't say.

What the narrator says

0:00One list the whole house can add to

Somebody finishes the milk. Somebody else needs crunchy peanut butter. And the person at the store never hears about either. Shopping Lists gives the whole household one place to put it.

0:14The household's shared lists

These are the Ashfords' lists, from a family invented for this demonstration. The whole house shares them. Groceries, the hardware store, and Thanksgiving dinner.

0:27Categories, quantities and shopper notes

Inside a list, items are grouped by category, the way you walk the store. Each one has a checkbox, a quantity, and a star. Notes for the shopper sit under the name.

0:40Search before you add

The box at the top searches before it adds. Type milk, and you see that whole milk is already on the list, oat milk was already bought, and chocolate milk is a favorite you can add with one tap.

0:55Adding something new

Something new says so. Add a note, like the big rolls, set the quantity, and press Add. If an item is already on the list, adding it again keeps the quantity it has.

1:09Favorites

Favorites are the things you buy again and again. Star an item once, and it waits here, ready to go back on the list with its usual quantity and note.

1:22Editing an item and its category

New items are filed under a category automatically. Tap one to change its name, quantity, note or category, and the list remembers your choice the next time anyone adds it.

1:36Your own categories, and checking things off

Each list keeps its own categories. Rename them, add your own, or put them in the order of your store's aisles. Empty ones stay out of the way. Check something off in the store, and it moves to Purchased, crossed out. Uncheck it, and it goes straight back on the list.

1:58Just tell your Chief

Or just tell Savannah, the family's Chief. When you don't name a list, she asks which one. You can say it out loud at home, too. Add bagels to the grocery list. Everyone's screen catches up within seconds.
