PrivateChief To-Do List: Household Chores, Assigned and Never Forgotten

2:10 · Narrated walkthrough of the real app · Watch on YouTube

The To-Do List is the PrivateChief tool for the household's small jobs: one shared list where every task has the name of the person doing it, a due date when there is one, and any details they need. Recurring home maintenance comes back onto the list by itself when it is due. The household in this walkthrough, the Ashfords, is invented for the demonstration.

To-Do List

What the To-Do List does

  • Keeps one to-do list for the whole household, with a count of open tasks.
  • Shows who each task belongs to; tap the name to hand it to another member of the household, or leave it unassigned.
  • Shows due dates and details such as sizes, locations or instructions.
  • Keeps a half-typed task while you move to another tool, and never adds the same open task twice.
  • Holds a maintenance plan of recurring jobs, each with how often it repeats, when it is next due and when it was last done.
  • Puts each recurring job on the list automatically when it comes due, and schedules the next one when it is marked done.
  • Your Chief adds, completes, assigns and removes tasks when you ask, and can help build a maintenance plan with sensible intervals.
  • Moves finished tasks to Recently done, with the name of whoever finished them.
  • Each member's morning briefing lists their own tasks and any nobody has taken.

What the narrator says

0:00Who is doing what, around the house

Every household runs on small jobs. Sign the form. Change the filter. Bring the bins in. The To-Do List keeps them in one place, with a name on each one.

0:12The household's shared list

This is the Ashfords' list, from a family invented for this demonstration. The whole household shares it. Seven jobs are open, each with the person who is doing it, and a due date when there is one.

0:27Details, done, and remove

A task can carry details, like the filter size and where the spares are kept. Tick the box when it's done. The trash can removes a job nobody needs any more.

0:40Handing a job to someone else

Tap a name to hand the job to someone else. Tasks go to people in the household. Work for Savannah, the family's Chief, goes to Projects instead.

0:52Adding a task yourself

Type a new task at the top and press Add. If you switch to another tool halfway through, the draft is kept. And the same task is never added twice.

1:04The maintenance plan

The maintenance plan holds the jobs that come back. The furnace filter every three months, the gutters every six, the water heater once a year. Each one lands on the list by itself when it comes due, marked recurring.

1:20Building a plan with your Chief

Ask Savannah to build a plan, and she suggests sensible intervals, then asks when each job was last done, so the dates start out right.

1:31Telling your Chief it is done

Tell her when something is finished. She marks it done, and for a recurring job she sets the next date and tells you when it will be back. New tasks work the same way, with a name and a due date.

1:46Recently done, and your morning briefing

Finished jobs move to Recently done, with the name of whoever finished them. And each person's morning briefing lists the jobs assigned to them, plus any that nobody has taken yet.
